The vision for Koleinu began with a heartfelt desire to create Jewish spiritual experiences beyond traditional religious services. It rose from the recognition that many Jews and interfaith families seek a deeper connection to Jewish wisdom and joy in ways that feel inclusive, relatable and personally meaningful.
After partaking in deeply moving Jewish musical experiences in other cities, Tali—an experienced educator and songleader in our community— brought this energy to local young adult circles through early iterations of Koleinu.
Today, Koleinu is proud to open its doors to the wider Twin Cities Jewish community with a vibrant and expanded musical ensemble. Whether you’re looking to find your Jewish spiritual outlet or enrich your existing Jewish practice, Koleinu offers a welcoming space to connect, reflect, and celebrate—all through the power of music and community.
Koleinu programming is primarily for adults of all ages. Teens are also welcome.
Everyone interested must register individually to each event, therefore anyone bringing a guest must have their guest register as well. Once registrations have been approved, we will share the event location with approved registrants. We appreciate your cooperation.
Children may attend if the caregiver feels the child[ren] will not take focus away from the experience for those participating. Children must be supervised at all times by their caregiver present.
We do not provide childcare at this time.
Anyone can register for events. However, programming will be most relevant to those engaging in Jewish living, whether they be Jewish themselves, are in interfaith families, or are involved in the community for personal reasons.
You do not need to consider yourself a good singer to attend: everyone is wanted!
Just remember all of us sang as children before society instilled in us that we might not be good singers. Koleinu is a space to reclaim our voice, and find joy, nurturing, and confidence is singing again. Music is medicine.
No. Participants will receive a song sheet that will include song lyrics. Hebrew songs will be presented in Hebrew letters, transliterated (presented in English letters), and translated to explain what we're singing. Previous knowledge of Hebrew can help.
No worries! All songs will be taught during our session. Unlike a music class or choir rehearsal, our sessions will apply live-time songleading. At times we may teach secondary parts, and other times we'll invite anyone who wants to add a harmony to do so.
Listening is always a great choice too! You can jump in when you're ready, or just enjoy the beautiful sound we're creating for the whole duration of a song.
No. Koleinu music selections may include texts from traditional liturgy as relevant to the event theme(s). When that occurs, intention is placed in using more expansive names and references to divine presence. We focus on the spiritual connection of one to oneself, one to the community, one to nature, and one to that-which-is-bigger-than-oneself.
For safety reasons, address of each event will be shared via email to accepted registrants on the days leading up to the event.
Whatever you want! This will be a comfortable, casual space.
We provide printed materials with song lyrics.
Events are held in physically accessible spaces.
Sound amplification is used for larger groups.
Event details and arrival directions are provided with a few days notice.
Participants are encouraged to be comfortable, including opting to sit in chairs, stand or move in the back of the room, and leave the room when needed.
Every few weeks! At minimum, we will aim to create programming for most holidays.
